$104m for basic infrastructure in ‘get on with the job’ budget

In a budget designed to get on with the job, more than $104 million will be spent in the coming year on infrastructure projects.

Acting mayor Wayne Wendt said these projects were the core function of council, delivering the people of Ipswich roads with the highest of safety standards, parks which are among the most beautiful and well-kept in the state, and sporting and community facilities of the highest available quality.

“These are essential projects that make Ipswich a better place and make our resident’s lives better,” Cr Wendt said.

“For example, there are hundreds of projects which ensure roads are properly sealed and safe to drive or ride on. Some of these projects are in the tens of thousands of dollars. Others, such as work on Rawle St at Camira, can cost almost $1 million to complete.

“As a council we are focused on liveability and the essential things which make resident’s lives better, and there are dozens of road, drainage, kerbing and channelling, and footpaths projects underway across all suburbs of Ipswich.

“When people wake up, they want to know that they can make their way around the city safely, that they have access to useful facilities, that the bins will be collected and that they can enjoy parks and places which add to their lifestyle.

“These are the things people must be able to rely upon in a growing city such as Ipswich, and we’re proud that we have such a strong workforce, proud of what they contribute to making Ipswich such a great place to live.”

Works Parks and Sport Committee Acting Chairperson Cr David Morrison said Ipswich had a fine legacy of first-class parks maintenance.

“Queens Park is well known, and Joseph Brady Park, Bob Gamble Park, Leichhardt Park, Providence Splash ‘n’ Play, Kohlo Gardens and Robelle Domain are all very popular,” he said.

“Our teams are highly qualified, and they’re always looking for the latest and greatest fitness equipment, play equipment and sporting equipment to help enhance the quality of life for all residents.

“This year’s budget allows for that mission to continue.”
