2020 City of Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition to light up suburbs

There are two new categories in this year's competition.

It’s time to unpack the lights, dust off the decorations and bring some sparkle to the suburbs with the 2020 City of Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition presented by IGA now open.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said entrants in this year’s competition have the opportunity to share in more than $5,500 worth of cash and prizes while spreading festive cheer.

“This year has been particularly tough with disruptions to our regular routine as we came together to fight COVID-19, and more recently with major storms causing significant damage in parts of the community,” Mayor Harding said.

“Many Ipswich residents and business owners go to great lengths each year to create uplifting Christmas light displays.

“It’s always a wonderful experience visiting local neighbourhoods and seeing the joy of people’s faces as they enjoy the displays.”

This year’s competition has been expanded with two new categories. The categories are:

  • Best Residential
  • Best Business/Organisation
  • Best Street
  • People’s Choice
  • Best New Entrant
  • Best Sustainable

The $5,500 worth of cash and prizes will be spread across the six categories, with the winners of this year’s Best Street category to enjoy an exclusive movie screening at Event Cinemas Springfield.

Businesses are encouraged to enter the Christmas lights competition.

Mayor Harding said the new categories of Best New Entrant and Best Sustainable display were about encouraging more people to enter the competition.

The popular People’s Choice award will also return, with voting online from 3 to 7 December.

“Council has also added a new listing only option to this year’s competition which will allow people who do not want to be in the running to win a category but would still like to have their display promoted to the community to do so,” Mayor Harding said.

“Anyone can request a listing only option for their display and it will be included alongside official entries in the competition on the Christmas in Ipswich website.”

Entries in the 2020 City of Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition are open until 9am on 30 November.

Entry is free. Full details on how to enter are available at www.christmasinipswich.com.au

The 2020 City of Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition is presented in partnership with IGA, Energex, River 94.9, Infants’ Friend, Event Cinemas, Burn Bright Studios and Premier Queensland.
