Ipswich seniors are at the heart of our community, and throughout October the city will come together to celebrate their generosity and lifelong contribution during Queensland Seniors Month.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said Seniors Month is a chance to recognise the everyday impact older residents make across the city.
“Our seniors volunteer, mentor, lead community groups, support local businesses and strengthen families, they’re at the heart of what makes Ipswich such a connected and caring community,” Mayor Harding said.
“Sixteen per cent of our population is over 60, and every one of them helps shape the character of our city. Seniors Month is about celebrating the people who have given so much, and creating opportunities for them to come together, share stories and enjoy time with one another.”
Throughout October, seniors can enjoy a wide range of events across Ipswich.
“The festivities officially kick off with the Welcome to Seniors Month Morning Tea hosted by The Y Queensland Ipswich Thriving Seniors Program. This will be held at two locations, Booval Fair Shopping Centre and Springfield Lakes Community Centre on 6 October at 9am,” Mayor Harding said.
“The Indigenous Wild Foods and Cultural Festival will bring culture and connection to Evan Marginson Park in Goodna on 10 October. This will be a fun day for the whole family to learn about our city’s heritage.
“And later in the month, Churches of Christ deliver an Ipswich Seniors Expo and Community Gathering, which will bring informative presentations, live entertainment and interactive activities.”
Mayor Harding said Queensland Seniors month brought a whole host of opportunities to try something new.
“There’s something for everyone. Learn the ukulele, try Tai Chi, explore local gardens and connect with neighbours, and the best bit is that most of the activities are free or low-cost,” Mayor Harding said.
“The Nicholas Street Building and Ipswich Civic Centre will shine pink and purple during the first week of October, then yellow and orange for Grandparents Day, as a visual celebration of the important role seniors play in our community.
“Our local seniors make a difference in our community each day and it’s important that we show our appreciation for all they do. I always enjoy seeing residents come together, make new friends and celebrate the vibrant senior community we have here in Ipswich.”
