Ipswich residents can dispose of items such as unwanted chemicals, fuel, paint, grease, gas bottles, batteries and flares at no cost on Ipswich City Council’s Free Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said Free Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day will be held at Riverview Resource Recovery Centre on Sunday, 11 October.
“It’s the perfect time to have a look in your shed and under the sink for those hazardous items you no longer need because Free Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day is coming,” Mayor Harding said.
“Free Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day is an opportunity for Ipswich residents to make households and neighbourhoods safer by cleaning out potentially dangerous substances and items from their properties.
“Safe disposal of these items prevents them from contaminating the environment and causing fires or chemical spills.
“Riverview Resource Recovery Centre will accept your household hazardous waste at no charge on Sunday, 11 October.
“Up to 20 litres or kilograms per waste type will be accepted. For paint, up to 100 litres will be accepted.”
Items able to be disposed of at Riverview Resource Recovery Centre for free are:
- Domestic barbecue gas bottles
- Marine distress flares
- Acids and Alkalis
- Brake fluid and coolant
- Fuel
- Motor and gear oils
- Glue
- Grease
- Herbicides
- Paint
- Pesticides
- Pool chemicals
- Rust inhibitors
- Solvents and thinners
- Stains and varnish
- Wood preservatives
While they can also be dropped off during the Free Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day, domestic barbecue gas bottles, motor and gear oils and paint can be disposed of for free year-round at Riverview and Rosewood Resource Recovery Centres.
Mayor Harding said batteries and battery-powered devices can also be disposed for free at the dedicated battery section of Riverview Resource Recovery Centre on Free Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day.
“Ipswich Waste Services Resource Recovery Centres and waste collection trucks are impacted by multiple fires per week, with batteries a leading cause,” Mayor Harding said.
“Residents can dispose of batteries, including household batteries and devices with unremovable batteries, at the dedicated battery sections of Riverview and Rosewood Resource Recovery Centres year-round.
“With Free Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day an opportunity to do a bit of a clean-out, we’re encouraging residents to also take their unwanted batteries to Riverview Resource Recovery Centre so they can be disposed of correctly and safely.”
