Chocolate Crackles reminds owners to register four-legged friends

Humans, it’s up to you. That is the message from Chocolate Crackles, a three-year-old dachshund, in a plea to Ipswich pet owners to register their dogs before 30 June.

This year Ipswich City Council is running a significant campaign during June in the lead up to the 2018/19 dog registration renewal due date, to encourage as many dog owners as possible to take advantage of the discounted fee.

Heath, Security and Community Safety Committee Chairwoman Cr Sheila Ireland said the campaign would include an upgraded registration rewards book, featuring:

  • 175 vouchers are included in the rego rewards book (up from 120 last year)
  • 65 businesses have vouchers in the rego rewards book (up from 45 last year)
  • New businesses include: café and restaurants; take away food outlets; more cinemas, pools and other entertainment businesses
  • Total value in vouchers – $3,500

“Council has mailed about 32,500 renewals out and at the same time is following up on outstanding registrations for the current period and continuing with the systematic inspection program to identify unregistered dogs,” Cr Ireland said.

The Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 requires all dogs over the age of 12 weeks to be registered with council.

“Dog registration provides identification, which improves the chances of lost dogs being reunited with their owners, promotes responsible pet ownership and allows council to provide appropriate management strategies and facilities,” she said.

“Council undertook two systematic inspection programs last financial year and identified that 13 per cent of the approximately 4,000 properties visited had at least one unregistered dog.”

There are about 32,000 registered dogs in Ipswich and council estimates there could be another 10,000 unregistered.

Cr Ireland said continuation of the program would increase the number of dogs carrying identification tags, improve council’s ability to locate owners of wandering dogs through registration tags, and minimise the number of impounded dogs that remain unclaimed.

“The 2017-2018 inspection program successfully identified unregistered dogs, with officers being received well by the community … it will further encourage responsible pet ownership and ensure the registration database remains accurate,” she said.

“The introductory rate of $20 per dog remains unchanged for the 2018-2019 financial year and represents excellent value to residents registering for the first time with council.”

The fee per de-sexed dog is $35, or $65 if paid after the due date.
