Christmas Wonderland to light up Ipswich

Families will be spoilt for choice this Christmas in Ipswich when the wrapping comes off the city’s biggest ever line-up of festive celebrations.

Suburbs will be brimming with Christmas cheer with more than 20 community-run carols events to be held across the city.

The much-loved Christmas parade, an Ipswich tradition, is on again and will wind its way through Queens Park on 14 December.

It will go past the Bush Chapel and make its way around to Burley Griffin Drive and past Nerima Gardens.

Streets will be sparkling for the River 949 Christmas Lights competition, which is free to enter with more than $3,000 in cash to be won. Christmas lights bus tours will again showcase the city’s best displays.

A free 12-day Christmas Wonderland in Nerima Gardens from 13 to 24 December will be the centrepiece of celebrations.

It will be unlike anything the city has seen and include a nightly light display, family-friendly entertainment, visit from Santa, roving performers and food trucks as well as Christmas music and movies.

The festive season events program will wrap up with a family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration at Len Johnson Oval, North Ipswich.

Interim administrator Greg Chemello said he was excited about this year’s line-up.

“The festive season is a wonderful time for families and I’m pleased that this year Ipswich will be delivering a whole-of-city Christmas and New Year program all about families,” he said.

Nerima Gardens in Queens Park will be the location for Ipswich’s first Christmas Wonderland.

“There really is something for everyone, whether it be a local community carols event, Christmas lights or the city’s first ever Christmas Wonderland in the Japanese themed Nerima Gardens.

“Japanese gardens are designed to invite discovery, which is perfect because the Wonderland promises to be a great opportunity for families to explore the magic of Christmas, celebrate the season and make memories that will last a lifetime.”

Council has continued to financially support the numerous community-run Christmas carols and other events, but will not host a separate Mayor’s Christmas Carols event this year.

“We want as many people as possible to enjoy the Christmas cheer in Ipswich and the Wonderland is a better fit, being held over 12 days compared to the single night event that was the Mayor’s Christmas Carols,” he said.

“Importantly, the expanded festive season celebrations will come at no additional cost to ratepayers with this year’s program costing less than last year’s spend.”
