Ipswich City Council has supported Woodend Park as a preferred location for a new playground to support the suburb’s growing population of young families.
Infrastructure, Planning and Assets Committee Chairperson and Division 3 Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said council decided on the location after a petition was received by council calling for a playground in the area.
“We’ve taken on board community feedback with more than 160 people having signed the petition for a local recreation park,” Cr Antoniolli said.
“Woodend is an expanding suburb with the number of children under the age of 10 growing and they should have access to play equipment.
“A playground in Woodend for families will support council’s iFuture theme of vibrant and growing and will be an important part of delivering the infrastructure our residents need, as their communities continue to thrive.”
The community petition called for a playground at either Smith Park or Woodend Park.
Following an assessment by council officers which considered proximity to homes and local sporting facilities, and took into account two existing parks in the greater area, it was determined Woodend Park was the most suitable location.
Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said the addition of a local recreation park at Woodend would complement the existing parks and ensure there were recreational spots for every family to visit.
“Woodend Park already has the supporting infrastructure for a playground with a car park, green spaces and two sports fields, so this really is the best course of action for the community, providing an opportunity for increased visitation to the area and more options for everyone to be active,” Cr Doyle said.
“Council will consider the provision of a playground in Woodend Park in the development of council’s future capital works program.”
Council provides more than 643 parks and reserve areas, covering more than 8,500 hectares.
