Council supporting range of Christmas festivities across Ipswich

Thousands of people attended the December 2018 Carols at Robelle Domain event

Ipswich City Council is supporting a huge range of community Christmas activities in 2019.

More than $60,000 has already been provided to community organisations developing and delivering a Christmas or other celebratory event relevant for the broader community.

General Manager of Community, Cultural and Economic Development Ben Pole said the Brassall Christmas in the Park and Springfield’s Carols at Robelle Domain events would benefit from council’s new multi-year funding agreements while 19 other groups had successfully submitted for council’s Christmas and Festive Season Grants Program.

Mr Pole said council officers independently assessed and reported on applications before being approved at Council.

“We have expanded our support commitments and made the process much more transparent,” he said.

“This year we put in place agreements with key community events which attract over 4,000 people and to provide some security we made them three-year agreements.

“Council now supports these events through multi-year partnerships to improve their planning and sustainability, ultimately enabling them to grow with the community.”

Mr Pole said the successful applications for the Christmas and Festive Season Grants Program 2019-2020 support events ranging from large scale community carols in the park and an outdoor cinema event, to events catering for disadvantaged community groups. Some of the events are expected to attract up to 3,000 people.

“Through the provision of community grants, council seeks to support the role of community organisations and recognise the significant role they play in developing and delivering initiatives that encourage participation in community life, foster social cohesion, celebrate diversity, and contribute to a vibrant, healthy and sustainable city,” he said.
