Detention basin to reduce flash flooding in CBD

Damage from flash flooding in parts of Ipswich CBD will be reduced in the future thanks to a new detention basin under construction in Limestone Park

Low lying parts of Ipswich CBD downstream of Limestone Park will benefit from reduced overland flows during and immediately after localised heavy rainfall.

The site within Limestone Park is adjacent to PCYC buildings and a helipad, and lends itself to forming a detention basin. Part of the project also includes a new irrigated cricket pitch and multi-use sporting field.

It will protect against flash flooding by storing stormwater runoff for a limited time and then release it slowly through a small outflow at the lowest point.

The new Limestone Park detention basin is estimated to cost $2.1m and while it will have significant benefits during flash flooding it will not prevent a major flood such as occurred in 2011 and 1974.

Ipswich has a number of existing detention basins across the city including major basins in Bundamba, Marburg, Rosewood and Redbank Plains.
