Elder abuse is everyone’s business

It’s an old adage that elder abuse is everyone’s business.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is held each year on 15 June to highlight elder abuse in all its forms.

The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and may include mistreatment or neglect.

It is often carried out by someone known and trusted by the victim such as a partner, family member, carer or friend.

Here’s some tips from Uniting Care Community’s Elder Abuse Prevention Unit for older people on how to stay safe:

  • Be active in your community. Keep a network of support with friends, neighbours and family.
  • Keep in touch with community networks such as health workers, church or medical practitioners.
  • Seek independent and/or professional advice when making changes to your financial or living arrangements.
  • Don’t make decisions or sign documents until you have all the information you need.
  • Write down important phone numbers such as for friends and police and have them handy.
  • If abuse happens, seek help. Tell someone you trust and feel comfortable with.

If you or someone you know is experiencing elder abuse, phone the Elder Abuse Helpline on 1300 651 192 for confidential advice or visit the No Excuse for Elder Abuse website.
