Extra incentive to create own suburban wonderland for Christmas lights competition

There is extra incentive for Ipswich residents to tackle the River 94.9 Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition this year with a visit from a Brisbane Broncos legend up for grabs.

The winners of the ‘Best Street’ category will receive a special visit from a Brisbane Broncos legend and a Street Party thanks to IGA Springfield Lakes.

Ipswich City Council General Manager Community, Cultural and Economic Development, Ben Pole, said the prize was added incentive for people to join in the competition with their neighbours.

“Christmas lights are a highlight of the festive season for many people and bring a great deal of excitement and happiness to the community,” he said.

“This year, in keeping with the theme of council’s own Christmas Wonderland at Nerima Gardens, we’re encouraging entrants to create their own suburban wonderland for the competition.

“If you want to win the visit from a Brisbane Broncos legend, it is the time to dust off your lights and start planning with neighbours to help your street shine.”

Brisbane Broncos chief executive Paul White said they were pleased to support this year’s competition.

“Ipswich is rugby league heartland home to many loyal Brisbane Broncos supporters,” Mr White said.

“The region has delivered its fair share of footy legends to our club over the years; the likes of Allan Langer, the Walters brothers and Ali Brigginshaw to name a few, so it’s fitting that we can return the favour with a visit from a club legend for the winners of Best Street in this year’s Christmas lights competition.

“Supporting the community is in our club’s DNA and we’re pleased to get behind this year’s Christmas celebrations in Ipswich.”

The River 94.9 Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition is free to enter and is open to residents, business and community groups. There is $5,500 in prize money to be won across four categories:

  • Best Residential presented by IGA West Ipswich
  • Best Business/Organisation presented by IGA Springfield Lakes
  • Best Street presented by IGA Springfield Lakes
  • People’s Choice presented by Energex

Energex Area Manager for Ipswich Lockyer, Graham Burke, said the electricity distributor was excited to be presenting the People’s Choice category in this year’s competition.

“It’s our job to power up the region every day of the year but there’s no better time to be doing it than Christmas when many in the community spread festive cheer through amazing light displays in their neighbourhoods,” Mr Burke said.

“Our staff from Raceview, Gatton, Esk and Boonah depots are thrilled to support the People’s Choice award of the River 94.9 Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition and we look forward to helping out with the judging of the category.

“We’d also like to thank the Ipswich City Council for running such an initiative that brings people together while fostering community spirit at this special time of year.”
