Free and low-cost school holiday fun and learning on offer across Ipswich

Ipswich will be the home of low and no-cost fun these September school holidays, with a wide range of activities to entertain, engage and educate children.

Ipswich City Council Community and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Jacob Madsen said the Ipswich Art Gallery, Ipswich Libraries and council’s popular Active and Healthy program all have some great free and low-cost activities to offer these holidays.

“Parents are always looking for activities to keep children entertained during school holidays, and council has activities for all ages and abilities,” Cr Madsen said.

“Whether you and your child are interested in outdoor activities, sports, learning a new skill, art or technology, there will be something on offer.

“Council’s affordable and popular Active and Healthy program includes sessions and classes all over the city including cricket, soccer, AFL, touch football, volleyball, yoga, fishing and more.

“Most of these activities are free, with some costing up to $5.

Children can meet reptiles birds up close while learning about conservation through an Ipswich Libraries program.

“Ipswich Libraries are inspiring curiosity and discovery in children through a diverse range of science and history-themed programs.

“Young explorers can unlock ancient secrets at the Egyptian Sarcophagus workshops, delve into medieval legends during Shields and Heraldry sessions, or uncover the wonders of prehistoric life at Fossil Finds Drop-In events.

“Your child can road test a robot and borrow it, or learn the basics of geology through some of the Ipswich Libraries programs.

“They can also understand the environmental impact of eWaste, learn how to safely dismantle devices and identify valuable components that can be refurbished.

“Wildlife enthusiasts aren’t left out either—children can meet reptiles and birds up close while learning about conservation and the importance of protecting our natural world.

Children can draw a monster that expresses the things they desire at Ipswich Art Gallery these school holidays.

“If your child is interested in art, the Ipswich Art Gallery has its IAG Kids: Imagine program, which encourages participants to respond to the gallery’s collections through their own creative making.

“They have also the Asia Pacific Triennial Kids on Tour program, where families and children in Ipswich can experience free, hands-on art-making activities developed by the Queensland Art Gallery.

“These are the sorts of things beyond the basic infrastructure that people look for from their council, and we are proud of both the range of activities on offer and the fact that the majority are low and no cost.”
