Free school holiday fun where kids can go wild

Wild ideas and active imaginations abound at the Kids Go Wild school holiday workshops.

Cadence hasn’t missed a Kids Go Wild session in about two years and she has an impressive collection of items to show for it.

The colourful bird feeder made one year hangs in her garden, the decorated kite has flown in the sky, the recycled material praying mantis has pride of place on Cadence’s shelf at home.

But council’s Kids Go Wild free school holiday workshops leave Cadence with more than a craft item. She has experiences that deepen her understanding of the outside world.

Even walking around Queens Park, there’s the magpie goose dubbed “Bruce” and various animals at the Nature Centre, or facts she has learned about the various trees, their flowers and seeds. Did you know bamboo is actually a type of grass?

“It’s fun and it’s educational,” Cadence said.

“You learn how to have fun playing in nature rather than the playground.”

Her father Dan said it was a bonus to have a free program available.

“It’s convenient at the Environment Education Centre. Depending on the weather, they can adapt and a lot of activities can be facilitated inside. They do have this big space to come back to,” he said.

“All the providers are carefully chosen because they have the education and entertainment aspect as well.”
