From the flight line to the Lions’ den

Brisbane Lions AFL Women's League draftee, Sergeant Maria Moloney, a loadmaster from No. 36 Squadron, RAAF Base Amberley.

Ipswich’s Sergeant Maria Moloney, of No. 36 Squadron, has celebrated her recent draft in the 2020 AFL Women’s League season for the Brisbane Lions.

To be selected, Sergeant Moloney proved her worth as an inside midfielder in the University of Queensland’s team and played three games for the Lions in their undefeated Queensland Women’s Winter Series campaign against the Gold Coast Suns.

Sergeant Moloney said she was still in shock about the draft.

“I was writing a report the day the drafting announcement was made and got a phone call from Lions Coach Craig Starcevich,” Sergeant Moloney said.

“The squadron, the whole club, both the men’s and women’s teams, and the club committee have been very supportive of me pursuing an AFLW career.”

Her love of AFL was reignited after her first year participating in the Air Force Football Club Carnival in 2018.

“Without a doubt, the carnival is a highlight of the working year,” Sergeant Moloney said.

“It’s an opportunity to make great friends and get exposure to other elements of the organisation outside of your little Air Force bubble.”

The AFLW season will run from February to April 2020.
