Get hooked on Ipswich’s incredible waterways during WaterFest

From March to May there will be lots of ways you can enjoy Ipswich’s important waterways as part of WaterFest 2026.

The beauty and biodiversity of Ipswich’s creeks and rivers will be celebrated with free and low cost activities during autumn.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the biennial WaterFest program was full of ways to get to know our local waterways.

“From March to May you will be inspired to get outdoors and get to know Ipswich’s Bremer River and our stretch of the Brisbane River and the many creeks within our catchments,” Mayor Harding said.

“Get your rods ready, because the Catch, Snap & Win fishing competition will be returning. Just by participating you can go into the draw to win a kayak!

“WaterFest is also a chance to try something new, with learn to fish and canoeing basics sessions on offer for all ages.

“Dive deeper into the rich biodiversity of our waterways with waterbug investigations at Tulmur Place, free workshops at Queens Park Environmental Education Centre, and a special bird walk in an Enviroplan conservation reserve.

“Families can also play waterway-themed ‘Agents of Discovery’ missions at different locations during WaterFest by downloading the free app and using a smartphone to play fun challenges.”

Mayor Harding said WaterFest would also include a community planting on the banks of Bundamba Creek, one of Ipswich’s important urban waterways.

“The work to improve and maintain healthy waterways is ongoing, and we can all play a part in a better environment for our wildlife and for us,” Mayor Harding said.

“These planting activities create stable banks that are more resilient to flood events, provide habitat for many species including platypus, and greener and cooler neighbourhoods.

“WaterFest provides opportunities to discover and appreciate the beautiful and biodiverse rivers and creeks across Ipswich – and do our part to care for them.”
