Heavy rain could cause flash flooding

Ipswich could be hit by potential flash floods in the next 24 hours, with between 20 – 60mm of rain expected.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Kimba Wong said that flash flooding was possible due to the amount of rain seen in the region over the past week.

“Catchments are already very wet due to the amount of rainfall we’ve had, so that increases the chance of flash flooding with even a short burst of heavy rain,” Ms Wong said.

Flash flooding is flooding that occurs within about six hours of rain, usually as the result of intense local rain.

Drier conditions are expected later in the week.

“As we head into Thursday and Friday, that shower and thunderstorm activity will start to ease off, so the weekend will be much drier than we’ve seen in recent weeks,” Ms Wong said.

“We’re not expecting to see any effects from Tropical Cyclone Uesi. It is tracking a bit closer to the mainland of Australia, but it’s still about 600km offshore, so there will be no direct impact for Ipswich at least.”

To stay up to date with the latest weather warnings and road conditions, head to Ipswich City Council’s Emergency Management Dashboard.
The dashboard provides the latest information on road closures, river heights, power outages and forecasts.

Due to the rapid rise of water in flash floods, some road closures could be resolved before they are reported and published to the Emergency Dashboard.
