How you can help Ipswich hit ambitious clean up target

The Ipswich community is being urged to get behind an ambitious target of 50 Clean Up Australia Day sites across the city in 2022.

Environment and Sustainability Committee chairperson Councillor Russell Milligan said the annual institution was an opportunity for residents to learn more about the waterways, creeks, bushland and forests that made up their local community, while helping keep the city clean.

“We live in a city blessed with green spaces, creeks, bushland and parkland, and while the vast majority of us do the right thing and put litter in the bin, there’s still many who don’t think about the consequences of where their litter goes,” Cr Milligan said.

“I would strongly encourage residents who are keen to help their communities, learn a bit more about the natural spaces in their neighbourhood, or just want a bit of outdoor activity, to find their nearest clean up site. Better yet, register and organise one for their area.

“We are proud to support this community-driven initiative – it’s easy and free to register a site. Every site organiser receives a free Clean Up kit with everything you need to run a local clean up event.

“For every community site registered before Friday 25 February, council will give free entry for a nominated vehicle to drop off collected rubbish to the Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre.

“Register as soon as possible to make sure you get your kit, and to get word out about your site.”

Clean Up Australia Day Chairman Pip Kiernan said the pandemic had led to an increase in some types of waste and litter.

“Our habits changed during COVID and most of these haven’t been kind on the environment,” Ms Kiernan said.

“Surges in online shopping, meal delivery services last year and the use of disposable face masks and coffee cups, mean the environment is feeling the after-effects of the pandemic in ways not seen before.”
