Igniting new ideas at Fire Station 101

There’s a fresh team at the helm of innovation hub Fire Station 101.

Ownership and operations of Fire Station 101 (FS101) have been transferred to council’s Office of Economic Development with the winding up of Ipswich City Developments and Ipswich City Enterprises.

At the same time a new team has formed to guide and promote initiatives at the start-up incubator, co-working space and events facility.

Project Manager Jodie Welsh, Project Officer Maria Baker, Smart City Project Officer Brandon McIntosh and Business Administration Officer Tracey Stevens are working on opportunities to reinvigorate and better align FS101.

Ms Welsh said there were many ways FS101 could be a vehicle for innovation.

“If you have ideas, a great starting point is to have a conversation with us,” she said.

One highlight is FS101’s connection to the Advancing Regional Innovation Program through Advance Queensland.

The program aims to turn regions into hubs of innovation, unlock business potential, strengthen industries and prepare for jobs of the future, and could be an option for initiatives that need funding.

FS101 also has a range of meeting spaces that can be booked or used as collaboration spaces.

An FS101 member Simon, who works for a carbon farming company, said one of the main benefits was networking and mentoring “to bounce ideas off other people”. His work has benefited from talking to other FS101 members with specialities in everything from web design to Ag tech.

Simon said the FS101 building was also a real asset to council. “The facility itself is amazing, light and airy, enjoyable and has good internet,” he said.

Fire Station 101 is at 101 Limestone Street (next to McDonalds). You can call on 0484 001 992.
