Ipswich centenarian and croquet club stalwart honoured

A plaque will be installed at Ipswich Croquet Club to honour the memory of long-time member Doris Jeffrey.

An Ipswich centenarian who dedicated more than a third of her life to one of the city’s most historic
sporting clubs will have her legacy enshrined.

Doris Jeffrey passed away aged 101 in June 2024 having spent 35 years as a member of the Ipswich
Croquet Club.

Ipswich City Council Infrastructure, Planning and Assets Committee Chairperson and Division 3 Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said a plaque honouring Mrs Jeffrey will be installed on a bench seat at the club in the picturesque Queens Park.

“Doris passed away last year but her memory will live on at the historic Ipswich Croquet Club in Queens Park,” Cr Antoniolli said.

“A life member, she was active as a volunteer and held several positions on the management committee, including President, prior to the retirement.

“The plaque is a fitting tribute for Doris, who was widely respected for her significant contribution over 35 years to Queensland’s third oldest croquet club, which was established in 1902.”

Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said council endorsed the tribute to Mrs Jeffrey after requests by her family and Ipswich Croquet Club.

“Institutions like Ipswich Croquet Club are part of our social fabric, bringing people together and making Ipswich a great place to live,” Cr Doyle said.

“But they wouldn’t exist without the dedication of people such as Doris, who was an enduring and beloved figure at the courts and heritage-listed clubhouse in Queens Park.

“With this tribute, she will be part of the club forever and members past, present and future can rejoice in her legacy.”
