Ipswich communities get new tools to prepare for future flood events

Seven Ipswich communities with a high flood risk will be better prepared for future flood events with the development of new Community Flood Awareness Guides.

With the assistance of the community, Ipswich City Council began preparing the new flood awareness guides – previously known as Community-based Flood Emergency Actions Plans – for locations identified as high priority based on hydraulic risk, community vulnerability and the impacts from the 2022 flood events.

Now, council is turning its attention to finalising guides for Brassall, Bundamba, Gailes, Goodna, Grandchester, Karalee/Barellan Point/Chuwar and North Booval and is seeking community feedback.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said these locations were identified through detailed analysis and modelling in the Ipswich Integrated Catchment Plan as high risk through both flood and community factors.

“Unfortunately, Ipswich is no stranger to floods and it is only a matter of time until we experience another one,” Mayor Harding said.

“Flood events have major social, environmental and economic impacts. One of the ways we can reduce the impacts of any future flood is to work with communities to improve preparedness before a flood event happens.

“That is what these Community Flood Awareness Guides are all about, taking into consideration the unique circumstances of each location and empowering community members to have a greater awareness of the flood risk in their local area.

“The guides also help residents to better understand locally relevant actions that can be taken before, during and after a flood event.”

People who live, work or have a connection to Brassall, Bundamba, Gailes, Goodna, Grandchester, Karalee/Barellan Point/Chuwar and North Booval are encouraged to have input into the guides with a short survey live now on council’s community engagement website Shapeyouripswich.com.au

Those with a connection to more than one location are asked to provide feedback for each location separately as each guide is different, with guides designed to be written by locals for locals.

The survey is open until Monday 25 May.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
