Ipswich is on the cusp of a renaissance and shopkeepers, foodies and experience creators are busily planning their next venture in the heart of the city’s budding new specialist retail, dining and entertainment scene.
As South East Queensland’s fastest growing city, Ipswich Central is the perfect location for entrepreneurs and seasoned business owners to set up shop. And they’re keen to hear what it would take to lure you in for a visit to the new Ipswich city centre.
The new city heart will also feature an exciting line-up of events and activities for residents and visitors alike and Ipswich City Council wants to know what would make you eat, play and stay in the city centre.
Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Ipswich Central Redevelopment Committee Marnie Doyle said it was one of the most exciting projects in Ipswich’s history and community input was essential.
“Our new city centre will be a beautiful place to visit and we want to ensure that the space is inviting and engaging so that people want to eat, play and stay,” Cr Doyle said.
“The opening of the new Ipswich Central Library in early December and then Australia’s first public children’s library will give residents and visitors a great feel for the new civic space, and construction is moving along quickly for the council administration building for completion mid-2021.
“For investors and business owners, tenancy opportunities exist for retail shops, cafes, restaurants, a cinema complex and an indoor go-kart track; ensuring a diversity of experiences on offer … but there is still opportunity for the community to share their ideas of what they’d like to see in the finished project.”
Council is inviting Ipswich residents to share their ideas on what they would like to see in the completed Nicholas Street Precinct. Festivals? Events? Markets? Health and fitness activities? Heritage events? Food trucks? Sporting events on the big screen?
“We’re also keen to understand what council can do to create a vibrant, enjoyable, safe precinct for you, your family or your customers,” Cr Doyle said.

Your responses and comments will be used to inform council’s Community Safety Strategy and Nicholas Street Events and Activation Plan.
Cr Doyle said this once-in-a-generation Nicholas Street Precinct redevelopment will be opened in stages with the second stage – the new 10,000m2 civic plaza and water play area – officially opening to the community on Saturday 28 November, and the new world-class Ipswich Central Library opening on Monday 7 December.
Stage one saw the completion of the new Nicholas Street (between Brisbane Street and Union Place), while stage two will include the new Tulmur Place and Ipswich Central Library. Stage three – the new administration building, children’s library and customer service centre – is expected to open in mid-2021. Stage four, which will include new dining, entertainment and retail, is set to open in late 2021.
