Ipswich tunes up for trombone world record attempt

Matt and Callum Chambers with Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding prepare for the trombone world record attempt.

Ipswich is calling for 400 trombonists of all ages and abilities to help make history with a bold attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest trombone ensemble.

The record attempt will take place on Sunday 12 July at Tulmur Place in the Nicholas Street Precinct, as part of the 2026 SPARK Ipswich Arts Festival.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the event was an exciting addition to this year’s SPARK Festival, which celebrates the city’s people, places, arts and culture.

“Ipswich is home to a vibrant creative and cultural scene, and I can think of no better place to bring the brass together in a bid for world record glory,” Mayor Harding said.

“The current Guinness World Record for the largest trombone ensemble stands at 368 musicians, set in Washington DC in 2012.

“We are going big and bold by inviting 400 members of the community to pick up a trombone and join us for this historic event, right here in the city heart.”

The event is being organised by Ipswich City Big Band Music Director Matt Chambers, who said the record attempt was about bringing people together through the shared joy of music.

“We welcome people of all ages and abilities to be part of the world record attempt, which will see us play the iconic piece 76 Trombones,” Mr Chambers said.

“Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, we’ll have music suited to different skill levels and plenty of support in the lead up.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attempt this world record, have fun and put local musicians on the world stage.”

Registrations are now open to participants of all ages, with players required to bring their own trombone to take part.
