Aussie tennis legend Rod Laver was courtside at Roland Garros to cheer Ash Barty to a win in round 16 of the 2019 French Open.

Ash Barty defeated unseeded American Sofie Kenin after dropping the first set 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 in match that lasted 90 minutes.

Currently number eight on the WTA tennis rankings, Ash Barty is only the fourth Australian woman to reach the quarter finals at Roland Garros.

This now places Ipswich’s tennis ace provisionally in the world’s top five after achieving an equal-best 28th victory of the year.

By making her second successive grand slam quarter-final, Ash is now only three wins from claiming Australia’s first French Open singles champion since Margaret Court in 1973.

This also places Ash Barty as the fourth Australian woman to reach the quarter-finals in 46 years.

Ash Barty has already defeated three Americans in Paris and will face another, Madison Keys, in the quarter final.
