It’s been a tough 18 months for the live music scene during the pandemic, but cabaret performer and singer Bec Djapovic is determined the show must go on.
Djapovic is a part of a girls singing group called The Vintage Belles who will showcase their singing and dancing cabaret performance at Ipswich Civic Centre later this month.
The Ipswich-based songstress started her career singing and dancing her way to stardom in the Ipswich Central State School choir and Ipswich Girls Grammar School chorale and says she is thrilled to see one of her shows on the big stage in her hometown.
“It’s still very exciting and an honour to be back in the Ipswich Civic Centre,” she said.
Djapovic said her interest in vintage 50s music was sparked at a young age when she first heard Peggy Lee, Dione Warwick and Aretha Franklin on the radio.
“My earliest memories are of these beautiful love ballads and storytelling sensibility of the 50s and 60s songwriters, while mum and dad drove me around to my different extra-curricular activities,” she said.
Despite all the glitz and glamour of her job as a dancer, actress and singer, Djapovic says the last year has been challenging as a performer with the obstacle of COVID-19 which has seen many performances delayed or cancelled.
“We’ve certainly been affected by COVID, in real life rehearsals have been harder to co-ordinate so we’ve been relying on Zoom sessions and accepting that a delay is probable in each session,” she said.
“The artists have had to work more independently on their harmony lines and I film the choreography at home and then sent them video’s over the internet.”
With her second baby on the way Djapovic says she has decided to sit out of the February performance of The Vintage Belles, taking a back seat to pursue some of her other creative pursuits while also managing the behind the scenes to ensure the show makes it to the big stage this February.
“I’ve taken myself out of the performance line up as I’m 30 weeks pregnant,” she said.
“Interestingly this downtime has given me a chance to write more of my own music and get back into the recording studio.
“I have recorded a single called Roll with the Punches which will be released later in the year post-baby number two.”
The Vintage Belles is a Cabaret girl’s night out with smoky voices, striking dancing and plenty of heart.
The show combines both Jazz, Gatsby, Swing and Pop music, it’s an all singin’ all dancin’ night out that’s sure to get your toes a-tappin’.
