New fitness class at Orion Lagoon makes a splash

A new Ipswich City Council active and healthy class is making a splash at Springfield Central’s Orion Lagoon, which has been awash with residents from all walks of life looking to improve their fitness and strength for free.

Community and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Jacob Madsen said council’s Active and Healthy Program has been expanded so that Aqua Fitness classes are now being held at Orion Lagoon.

“With the summer school holidays wrapped up for another year, you could be forgiven for thinking the popular water facility would be anything but active during the week,” Cr Madsen said.

“However, this new weekly class is proving to be an absolute hit, with 40 people attending the first week and 120 participating in the second.

“Aqua Fitness has been held at council pools in Goodna, Bundamba and Leichhardt for years and been incredibly popular, so it made sense to give more residents the opportunity to get involved.

“These low impact fitness classes are a great way to keep active without the significant risk of injury.

“We know sport and recreation plays a key role in keeping the community active and vibrant, and the Active and Healthy Program supports the Ipswich community to come together while improving health outcomes.”

Deputy Mayor and Division 2 Councillor Nicole Jonic said council has been inundated with positive feedback about the program.

“We’ve had a wonderful mix of attendees at the first two sessions, including mums and bubs, elderly citizens and people who have not had much previous exposure to water activities,” Cr Jonic said.

“Orion Lagoon is a beloved feature of the eastern suburbs of Ipswich, and I’m very happy to see it being enjoyed by our community.”

More than 8,000 Ipswich residents are registered to participate in the Active and Healthy Program, which provides a range of free and low-cost physical fitness, outdoor recreation and wellness classes for every age and ability.
