New smart meters make parking in Ipswich Central more convenient

Division 3 Councillor Andrew Antoniolli shows one of the new pay-by-plate parking meters installed in Ipswich Central.

New pay-by-plate parking meters are now operational across Ipswich Central.

The meters replace the city’s ageing pay-and-display system with modern smart parking technology, making it easier for residents and visitors to access on-street parking in the city centre.

Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said the new meters would improve customer experience.

“Drivers no longer need to place a paper ticket on their dashboard,” Cr Doyle said.

“Instead, users simply enter their vehicle registration number at the meter, with payment linked directly to their number plate.

“This is a more convenient and intuitive system for motorists while also reducing paper waste and maintenance requirements associated with the older technology.”

Division 3 Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said 112 legacy parking meters have been replaced with 90 new pay-by-plate meters.

“The new meters give motorists more choice in how they pay with users able to pay using credit and debit card PayWave, the EasyPark parking app on their phone or coins where the meter accepts them, as well as some virtual pay stations installed for parking app users,” Cr Antoniolli said.

“There has been no change to hourly parking rates – including the opportunity to park up to 15 minutes for free.

“The new meters will provide faster transactions, improved reliability and reduced maintenance issues.”

The rollout aligns with council’s iGO Intelligent Transport Systems Strategy, which identifies smart parking technologies as a key initiative to improve transport network efficiency and enhance user experience.
