Travelling a key thoroughfare in Ipswich will be safer thanks to the installation of a new speed awareness sign.
Ipswich City Council has allocated $20,000 under the Provisional Projects program for the new safety initiative on Lobb Street in Churchill after community concerns about the speed of vehicles travelling on the busy road.
Division 4 Councillor David Martin said Lobb Street had carried an increasing amount of traffic in recent years.
“Lobb Street is an important thoroughfare connecting the inner west suburbs of West Ipswich, Leichhardt and One Mile to Churchill and Yamanto as a gateway to the growing south of our city,” Cr Martin said.
“Community members raised concerns about motorists’ speeds on Lobb Street and the new speed awareness sign will help to combat speeding.
“Council is determined to make Ipswich roads as safe as possible and speed awareness signs are an effective reminder to motorists to adhere to speed limits.”
The new sign on Lobb Street will display to drivers:
- A green smiley face if they are on or under the speed limit
- A red frown face if they are above the speed limit by up to 9km/h
- A red “SLOW DOWN” message if they are travelling 10km/h or above the speed limit.
Division 4 Councillor Jim Madden said the speed awareness sign will benefit local residents and businesses.
“The Provisional Projects program allows councillors to gain funding for projects not included in the forward plan for Capital Works but are important to the community,” Cr Madden said.
“Council has listened to residents who raised these concerns and speed awareness signs are a practical and effective way to improve road safety.
“The majority of drivers do the right thing on our roads but sometimes others need a reminder of the speed limits, which they will get from the new sign.”
