Taking a running jump for Legacy

Civilian skydivers walk out to a Royal Australian Air Force No. 36 Squadron C-17A Globemaster aircraft at RAAF Base Amberley ahead of the Legacy Skydive. *** Local Caption *** Approximately 270 skydivers took the leap from Royal Australian Air Force No. 36 Squadron C-17A Globemasters over South East Queensland on 10 November 2018, raising nearly $38,000 for charity. Participants donated to Legacy Australia for the opportunity to participate in the event, which saw them depart RAAF Base Amberley and jump to Ramblers Drop Zone at Toogoolawah, north west of Brisbane. As well as raising money for Legacy, the activity was an opportunity for Air Force to showcase its air mobility capability with the C-17A. Previous iterations of this event raised approximately $11,000 in 2016 and $30,000 in 2017.

Even for skydivers, having the chance to run out of the back of a military plane is rare.

Two hundred and seventy civilian skydivers and five Legacy youths took part in the jump which raised $38,000 for Legacy Ipswich.

For the Air Force crew of the C-17A Globemaster, the runs were routine.

Three missions were flown throughout the day on Saturday from RAAF Base Amberley. Participants donated to Legacy for the opportunity to participate in the event.

The skydivers landed at the Toogoolawah Drop Zone.

Taylah Green is a Legatee who took part in a tandem jump.

“My father SQNLDR Brett Green last year passed away and Legacy took my family and me onboard,” she said.

“Legacy has built our family back up and they have given us a support beam. It’s really good to be able to talk to other people who know what it’s like to lose a parent.”
