Thousands more books on shelf at Redbank Plains Library

Redbank Plains Library has reopened this week following a temporary closure to allow for the return of thousands of books.

Earlier this year, council decided to change the service offering at Redbank Plains Library to allow for the establishment of a Library Collections Logistics Hub at the facility.

The Logistics Hub supports the libraries’ operations across all branches.

The initial work at Redbank Plains included the inclusion of more public access computers, a kitchenette to support activities in the public meeting rooms, installation of RFID self-service loans and returns, installation of a snack and drinks vending machine as well as Ipswich Libraries’ successful Marketplace style recommended book selections being extended to the Redbank Plains branch.

The changes were well received, however community concerns were raised about the drop in the number of books on shelf at the branch.

As a result, council resolved in August to increase the number of books on shelf from 5,100 to 10,000 items.

The library was closed from 12 to 16 December to install shelving and reinstate the books to the library. Members were notified of this closure by direct mail, social media and email.

Alongside the increased numbers of books, the Redbank Plains branch will continue to operate as a logistics hub supporting other library branches across Ipswich.

Arts, Social Development and Community Engagement Chief Operating Officer, Caroline McMahon, said the completion of works at the Redbank Plains branch capped off an exciting year for Ipswich Libraries.

“This year has seen the opening of our new Springfield Central Library which has been a great success,” she said.

“On average around 900 people per day are visiting the new Springfield Central Library.

“Total visitor numbers across all Ipswich libraries have jumped almost 23% in the last quarter, up from 141,415 in the April-June quarter to 173,797 for July-September.”
