April 1941
A humorous piece appears in the Queensland Times where Steven Bentham recounts the first Lancashire ‘tater pie’ he tasted when he arrived in Ipswich. He was invited to dinner at the home of Sergeant and Mrs Mather where Mrs Mather made a ‘tater pie’. Mr Bentham was so impressed that, following the dinner, he famously hired and fired six cooks at the Commonwealth Hotel in as many weeks because they could not make the tater pie to his liking.
