Amid a sea of heritage buildings characterised by the simplistic symmetry of gable roofs and wrap-around verandas, something different emerged architecturally in the heart of Ipswich in 1975.
With its bold geometric architecture, featuring diagonal lines accentuated as light strikes the all-white façade, this new building was designed to turn heads.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said over 50 years, Ipswich Civic Centre has been more than a brilliant addition to the city’s aesthetic appeal as it is embraced by residents as a centrepiece of the cultural landscape.
“Opened in 1975 by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, Ipswich Civic Centre has played a vital role in the growth of our burgeoning city as the premier space of our vibrant performing arts sector,” Mayor Harding said.
“So many Ipswich residents and visitors have been through its doors to enjoy the thousands of shows performed in the renowned George Hogg Auditorium, whether it be theatre, music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more.
“Ipswich Civic Centre has helped nurture our city’s rising stars in performing arts by providing them a stage to showcase their talents, as well as giving established performers opportunities to entertain live audiences.
“It has also been a place for the community to gather in celebration, hosting wedding receptions, school formals, eisteddfods, graduation ceremonies, awards ceremonies, conferences, community events and parties.
“I’m delighted that we will be celebrating Ipswich Civic Centre’s 50th birthday with a huge week of events.
“The line-up of shows features a plethora of talented Ipswich performers alongside big names such as comedian Mel Buttle, singer-songwriter Pete Murray and DJ Groove Terminator.
“With plans to upgrade Ipswich Civic Centre progressing with the help of a recent $3.8 million investment from the Federal Government’s urban Precincts and Partnerships Program, this glorious institution is set to enrich our city as a hub for artistic expression for another 50 years to come.
“Happy 50th birthday, Ipswich Civic Centre.”
Economic and Cultural Development Chair Councillor Pye Augustine said the week of events starting on 11 July will culminate with Hipswich on 19 July.
“Hipswich is a celebration of new and old when it comes to Ipswich’s performing arts scene, bringing a diverse range of performers together under one roof in a night of unmissable entertainment,” Cr Augustine said.
“It features a massive line-up of local talent including beatboxing social media sensation Tom Thum, rising singing star Paulina and musical juggernaut The Swich Band alongside cultural pillars such as Ipswich Musical Theatre Company, Ipswich City Big Band, Ipswich Model Band and local choirs.
“There will be so many other great events throughout the week, with Groove Terminator spinning the discs on 11 July, Pete Murray belting out his classics the following night and Mel Buttle bringing the laughs with her Taking My Sunglasses Off To Hear You Better show on 18 July.
“Beloved former Home and Away star Lynne McGranger will take the stage in musical comedy Cruising with the Grandparents Club on July 15, while Showmen will perform their jaw dropping spectacle of magic, illusions and stunts on 17 July, and there will be a genre bending plethora of artists performing across the six free nights of Carpark Party.
“Children can get in on the celebrations with a lantern workshop and children’s entertainer Lucas Proudfoot bringing his Proudfoot and Friends ensemble on July 13.
“I invite all residents to join us in celebrating the 50-year journey of Ipswich Civic Centre as we look forward to its bright future as the place to come in Ipswich for fantastic performances.”
