Works to bring River Heart Parklands back to life underway

Ipswich’s much-loved riverside walkway at River Hearts Parklands is being restored, as council works toward the park’s full re-opening to the public.

Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said about 20 metres of the concrete footpath that was damaged from severe weather brought by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in 2025 is being rebuilt.

“The walk along the Bremer River through the picturesque River Heart Parklands is a popular attraction for people living and working in Ipswich Central and surrounding areas,” Cr Doyle said.

“Residents and visitors will soon be able to enjoy strolling through the tree-lined riverbank when these important works are complete.

“River Heart Parklands, including Bob Gamble Park, are important features of our city centre and allow people to appreciate the natural beauty and environmental significance of the Bremer River.

“I look forward to River Heart Parklands reopening to the public early next year.”

Division 3 Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said the footpath was damaged by a landslide shortly after ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in early 2025.

“The severe weather event caused a landslip which resulted in the embankment under part of the footpath to collapse,” Cr Antoniolli said.

“As well as the footpath repairs, the River Heart Parklands bank stabilisation works include piling, rock protection and minor re-vegetation.

“These works are designed to make River Heart Parklands more flood resilient, meaning the site can recover more quickly and at a lower cost after each flood event.

“This will require significant earthmoving activities, so there may be impacts to traffic and pedestrian access during this time. These works, which are taking place on the southern bank of the river, are expected to start this month and finish in March, pending favourable weather conditions.”

The works are being funded jointly through the Australian and State Government’s Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
