Local sporting stars and administrators are set to be recognised in the 2021 Ipswich Sport Awards, with nominations now open for gongs ranging from Official and Volunteer to Team and Senior Sportsperson of the year.
Mayor Teresa Harding said the awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the community strength and resilience that local sport brings to Ipswich.
“Our city is Queensland’s sporting heartland, the home of Ash Barty, Shane Watson, the Walters Brothers, Ali Brigginshaw and so many more greats,” Mayor Harding said.
“It takes a village to raise a star. Our dedicated local sportspeople and administrators have built the grassroots culture that makes Ipswich such a great place to play.
“It could be your local cricket coach or a parent who works tirelessly washing football jerseys on the weekend, we want to recognise all community contributors in the 2021 Ipswich Sports Awards.”
Award categories for 2021 are:
- Official of the Year
- Volunteer of the Year
- Coach of the Year
- Masters Sportsperson of the Year
- Sporting Organisation of the Year
- Team of the Year
- Junior Sportsperson Award
- Senior Sportsperson Award
Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee Chair Councillor Andrew Fechner said the awards were a fantastic opportunity to highlight the achievements of club volunteers, administrators, coaches, and players in our community.
“Local sporting clubs are sustained by their wonderful volunteers – without them players couldn’t play,” Cr Fechner said.
“The Ipswich Sport Awards aim to recognise these volunteers who support our community to be more active and healthy.
“I encourage community members to nominate their local club legends who deserve a little extra recognition for their unflagging efforts to nurture and nourish sport in Ipswich.
“I can’t wait to celebrate Ipswich’s sporting talent and volunteers at this year’s Ipswich Sports Awards Gala dinner.”
Nominations for the 2021 Ipswich Sports Awards close 13 August.
Winners will be announced on the 29 October 2021.
