Banking and finance lawyer brings legal expertise to council

New Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle was born and raised in Ipswich and says she is extremely passionate and proud of the city.

The Sadliers Crossing resident has worked for almost 25 years as a banking and finance lawyer. She is a St Mary’s old girl and holds a Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws.

Cr Doyle’s family has deep connections to Ipswich and its founding industries and local business. The importance of industry and successful businesses in Ipswich is front of mind for the first-time politician and is at the heart of her vision for Ipswich.

“I look forward to working with you all to create better outcomes for Ipswich underpinned by transparency and integrity,” Cr Doyle said.

“Business as usual will be no more, the community and governing bodies have spoken, the message is loud and clear that a new standard of integrity, transparency, professionalism and sound economic decisions is required. My goal is that Ipswich will emerge as a leader in corporate governance in local government throughout Queensland under the leadership of Mayor Teresa Harding and fellow councillors.

“We must get this right, Ipswich is depending on us.”

Cr Doyle brings a wealth of corporate experience to council. Her professional CV includes extensive work on both Federal and State Government tenders for the provision of banking services, payment services and large syndicated loan facilities as well as international trade finance facilities to large public companies.

She said that through this work, she had developed sharp negotiation, drafting and advocacy skills, and is highly experienced in interpreting complex legislation and regulation across Australia, the US and the UK.

Cr Doyle has also undertaken extensive work on projects including open data, privacy and digital transformation – important issues in Australia with a direct impact on local government. Policy development and risk management have also been a key aspect.

“I am committed to fighting hard for Ipswich to ensure it receives the required support and backing from the State and Federal Governments to grow our beautiful city and adequately support our projected population growth over the next 10 -15 years,” she said.

“I am also deeply committed to ensuring equality and support for all residents of Ipswich, in particular our most vulnerable residents, as well as minority groups and our indigenous residents.”

Cr Doyle said her skills list includes a high level of diplomacy and etiquette and believes she has the required skills and experience to advocate for Ipswich and ensure the region receives an appropriate share of funding and infrastructure projects on offer from George Street and Canberra.

Her declaration of office was performed in the CEO’s office – similar to new council colleagues and a necessity of the current climate.

“I would have loved to include family and friends for such an important milestone, but of course not to be with the Covid-19 restrictions,” she said.

“I am humbled and delighted by the overwhelming support I have received from the residents of Ipswich … I am forever grateful. I would also like to acknowledge the confidence in me shown by the local business community and the professional community.

“A big thank you to my family and friends, as well as new friends, that have supported me through this journey.

“I am extremely optimistic about the future of Ipswich, together we can achieve great things.”
