Be a sport and nominate now for annual awards

Ipswich Sports Awards sponsors Steve and Jaye Mallet with 2017 Volunteer of the Year Dane McQueen.

An annual sports awards program that last year honoured the Ipswich Hockey Association, veteran athletics coach Michael Moore and Brothers Football Club volunteer Dane McQueen is now open for nominations.

The 2018 Ipswich Sports Awards includes categories for juniors, seniors, masters, volunteers, coaches and clubs.

Awards spokesman Councillor David Morrison said the event acknowledged the excellence of one of Australia’s great sporting cities.

“Look no further than last year’s Team of the Year, the Greater Springfield Sports Under-15 Girls AFL side that broke new ground for young women in sport,” he said.

“Then we have the Sports Excellence award winners in Western Pride FC, the champions of National Premier Leagues Queensland.”

Cr Morrison said Ipswich was a leader across many playing fields.

“The city continues to produce state, national and international representatives across every code and individual endeavour imaginable,” he said.

“We also have top class coaches, officials and administrators and hundreds of loyal volunteers who dedicate their time to their chosen sport.”

Nominations for the 2018 Ipswich Sports Awards close at midnight on Sunday, 7 October.

Winners will be announced at an awards dinner on Friday, 9 November.
