Beautiful artwork has historic links to councillor

An oil-on-canvas by famous British-born, Australian artist and painter Isaac Walter Jenner, valued at $21,750, has been donated to the Ipswich Art Gallery collection.

Jenner, born in 1837, is the great, great, great grandfather of Arts and Community Development Committee Chairperson Cr Kylie Stoneman, who welcomed the painting and 10 other works of art acquired by the Ipswich Arts Foundation Trust and donated to council.

Jenner came to Brisbane in 1883 and made a living selling paintings, holding art unions and teaching art at Oxley and the Brisbane Technical College. He helped found the Queensland Art Society in 1887.

On the Coast, valued at $21,750, was painted by Jenner in Brisbane in 1897, five years before he died at his home in Taringa. A second donation, A bit of the Cornish Coast (Granite), was painted by the artist in 1884 and at half the size, is valued at $7,000.

Another interesting donation to the Ipswich Art Gallery this month was a brass, nickel and leather Ipswich Fire Chief’s helmet, circa 1860, and valued at $1,000.

Cr Stoneman said the gallery was grateful for obtaining these significant items, several made available through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program.

“Thanks to the Ipswich Arts Foundation Trust these items have been acquired for the further development of the City of Ipswich Collection, increasing its diversity for future generations,” she said.
