How you can get ready for the Queen’s Baton Relay

The countdown is on to the arrival of the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) in Ipswich and CBD businesses and residents are being encouraged to think ahead about how it may impact them.

The relay will visit Ipswich on 29 March on its way to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

It is scheduled to leave from Hunter Street, Brassall about 2.30pm and make its way along Pine Mountain Road, over the David Trumpy Bridge and into the CBD.

From here it will head toward St Mary’s Church and Ipswich Grammar School before travelling along Brisbane Street on its way to a community celebration event at Limestone Park, where it is scheduled to arrive at 5.30pm.

Rolling road closures will be in place and disruptions should be expected.

Councillor Cheryl Bromage, council’s representative on the relay’s local planning group, said the relay was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the Commonwealth Games and showcase Ipswich.

“The relay will make its way past some of our city’s most iconic locations, which will provide a wonderful backdrop not only for those taking part but also spectators,” she said.

“The relay comes to Ipswich on the last day of school term, around school pick-up time, and will go through the CBD, so traffic disruptions are inevitable.

“We are encouraging residents and businesses to mark the date in their diary, familiarise themselves with the route and think about how it might impact them on the day.

“CBD businesses may need to be aware of the road closures and motorists should avoid the area while the relay is on.

Parking away from the route and walking to one of the many great vantage points to watch the relay is the best option for spectators.”

A website with important information about the relay is available at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/qbr

“It will be updated with more information as we get closer to the event so I encourage the community to keep checking in,” Cr Bromage said.
