Celebrate Father’s Day with Bikes, Beards and BBQ

A face-off between Ipswich’s best beards and momentous moustaches will take place on Father’s Day at Tulmur Place.

Galvanized: Bikes, Beards & BBQ is a free, family-friendly event bringing together the official Ipswich ‘Stache & Beard Competition 2021, food trucks, live entertainment and a display of vintage motorcycles.

More than 100 bikes and riders from the Historical Motorcycle Club of Queensland will ride into the event, with President Ken Butler promising some old and interesting bikes will be on show.

“The bikes have to be a minimum of 30 years old to take part – but some of the bikes are over 100 and some of the riders are over 90. It should be a good show,” Mr Butler said.

Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee Chair, Councillor Andrew Fechner, said there is a Galvanized event for everyone, including Ipswich’s dads.

“Beards have a long history in Ipswich, dating back to our roots as a mining town and industrial powerhouse,” Cr Fechner said.

“This is just one of the many stories that our many passionate and dedicated community groups are telling at the Galvanized Festival.

“Thank you to all of the creative, craft, train, motor and history buffs for bringing our city’s rich and diverse history to life.”

The Historical Motorcycle Club of Queensland is celebrating its 50+1 Golden Anniversary that weekend, after last year’s 50th anniversary celebrations had to be cancelled.

In between checking out the bikes and visiting the food trucks, bearded and moustached men over the age of 18 are encouraged to enter the beard and ‘stache competition, which features four categories. They are:

  • Beard Freestyle: Free styling, free creativity, and design of the beard. Styling aids permitted.
  • Full Beard: For beards 20cm and beyond. Big, full, natural, and wild.
  • Freestyle Moustache: Free styling, free creativity, and design of the ‘stache. Styling aids permitted.
  • Long ‘Stache: 10cm – 20cm. Long and primed.

Competitors can submit a photo and entry at https://nicholasstprecinct.typeform.com/beard-comp-2021 but must attend the September 5 event to win the event.

The Father’s Day event will mark the final day of the Ipswich Galvanized Heritage Festival – a 10-day celebration of the city’s heritage.
