Community called on to help name swim safety mascot

Residents are getting their say as council rolls out its new awareness and education program on water safety and pool compliance.

The community has been invited to name the aquatic mascot set to front SEAL, a new program providing free water safety lessons for children and adults, CPR awareness programs and pool compliance seminars.

The leading letters focus on concrete actions to keep safe around the water: S, supervise around the pool, E, enclose the pool with a fence, A, actively check the pool gate and fence, and L, learn CPR and to swim.

Chair of the Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee and Division 3 Councillor Andrew Fechner encouraged the community to help name council’s newest mascot while raising pool safety awareness.

“Queenslanders love hitting the pool on stinking hot summer days,” Cr Fechner said.

“Whether it’s in the backyard or at one of council’s awesome aquatic facilities, cooling off with a splash is always fun, but too often that fun turns tragic.

“Very sadly, on average, 10 children under five drown each year in Queensland.

“That’s why I’m encouraging the community to have a go at naming council’s newest mascot and to help raise awareness about pool and water safety within our community.

“Not only does the SEAL program help children five and under learn to swim for free, it also provides adults who can’t swim with water safety programs which helps keep more people in our community safe.”
