Council chases Cycle Network grants

Ipswich City Council is seeking almost $2 million from the Queensland Government to help deliver high quality and safe cycling facilities on major cycle routes across the region.

Council has been working with the Queensland Government on the development and adoption of a Principal Cycle Network Plan.

As a result, many projects have been designed and constructed by Council.  Funding for the projects has been on a 50/50 basis with the Government under its Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program.

Infrastructure and Emergency Management Committee Chairperson Cr Cheryl Bromage said that Council will again seek funding for four cycle projects it hoped to be delivered in the 2018/2019 financial year.

“These projects align with Council’s iGO Active Transport Action Plan and the 10-Year Transport Infrastructure Investment Plan” she said.

  • Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Connector – 1.85km of new 3m shared path from Diamantina Boulevard, Brassall, under the Warrego Highway, to Bayley Road and the BVRT recreation corridor. Cost $2.1m.
  • Eastern Ipswich Link – 250m of new 3m shared path on Milford St at Queens Park and South St. Cost $430,000.
  • Brassall Bikeway Stage 5 – 1.2km of new 2.5m shared path linking Karrabin, Wulkuraka and West Moreton Anglican College to the Brassall Bikeway and BVRT via Keswick Rd, including a bridge over Iron Pot Creek. Cost $1.4m.
  • Ipswich Motorway Bikeway Data Counters – Installation of four permanent counters along the existing bikeway for planning, monitoring and evaluation purposes. Cost $50,000.

Cr Bromage said the four projects met the program’s eligibility criteria, including being listed as a Highest Priority Route in the 2017 South-East Queensland Principal Cycle Network Plan Priority Route Maps, which had been endorsed by Council.

“They will improve connectivity and increase safety and enjoyment for all cyclists,” she said.
