Council commits to free public wi-fi at libraries and other locations

Ipswich City Council will continue to provide free broadband wireless internet 24/7 for the community at various locations, including libraries.

Council has adopted a revised Free Public Wi-Fi Policy that ensures users of the network will have their privacy protected.

General Manager of Corporate Services Sonia Cooper said previous council policy relating to free internet and open data and been reviewed for the first time in four years and upgraded.

“Ipswich City Council recognises providing access to free internet via wi-fi to the public at certain sites attracts and engages the community of Ipswich City and South East Queensland and contributes to the increased profile and reputation of the city,” Ms Cooper said.

“This policy will assist in managing the provision of free wi-fi at approved council sites and the controls for anonymised (private) data collection and utilisation.”

The Open Data Policy relates to the sharing of council data with the public, which has a wide reuse potential.

Ipswich aspires to become one of Australia’s most liveable and prosperous smart cities, harnessing the potential of new technologies and data to help residents improve their lives.

“Whether it’s data on local housing in Ipswich, conservation areas, organising sporting events or family days out, or finding flood information, council believes open data can help people better understand and interact with the City of Ipswich,” Ms Cooper said.

“This policy will assist in managing open data according to key principles, regulations and community expectations.”

It also ensured council remained transparent and accountable with data collected.
