Council plans for controlled re-opening of facilities

Fire Station 101, Ipswich City Council’s innovation hub, will re-open to a maximum of 10 people at a time from Monday, 18 May.

Division 2 Councillor Nicole Jonic said members and their guests would be able to book time at the facility during business hours.

“We will use an online booking system to ensure we don’t exceed the 10-person rule,” Cr Jonic said.

“We are also waiving our members’ fees at this stage for the rest of the month.”

Community centres throughout the city have been offering community support over the past two months, including the packing of food hampers.

Each community centre will look to re-open some services from Monday, 18 May and by appointment only.

Cr Jonic said centres included Springfield Lakes Community Centre YMCA, Redbank Plains Community Centre, Gailes Community Centre, Leichhardt Community Centre, Riverview Community Centre, Rosewood Community Centre, Goodna Community House, Springfield Camira Community Centre and Riverview Neighbourhood House.

She said community centres played an important role in helping connect communities.

“There are play groups, health clinics, parenting advice, support groups, counselling and job support, to name only a small but important part of a long list of valuable services,” Cr Jonic said.

“To see these services gradually open is an important step to help our communities through a recovery phase which could last for some time.”

Cr Jonic said the Ipswich Art Gallery is planning to re-open on 12 June, just in time for a school holiday program which continues to respect social distancing guidelines.

Up to 20 people will be allowed into the gallery at any given time, in 30-minute blocks.

The Ipswich Civic Centre’s next show “Ross Noble – Humournoid” is scheduled for 25 September. It remains subject to potential continued restrictions.

Meeting facilities will be available for bookings for groups of up to 10 from Monday 18 May, and groups of up to 20 from 12 June.

Council’s easing of restrictions is being staged in accordance with the conditions and timeframes directed by the State Government, as announced by the Premier last Friday.

Council will continue to be guided by the National Cabinet and the State Government in relation to Covid-19 as the health and well-being of our community remains the number one priority.
