Council again to support Ipswich Cup

IPSWICH City Council will again support one of the biggest days on the city’s event calendar.

The 2018 Ipswich Cup will be held on June 16 at the Ipswich Turf Club.

Economic Development and Digital City Committee chairman Cr Paul Tully said council would again be one of the major sponsors of the biggest race days by attendance in Queensland.

“Horse racing events have been held in Ipswich since 1860. Firstly at the Grange, before moving to the current site at Bundamba in 1890.

“The Ipswich Cup in its current form has been run at Ipswich Turf Club since 1934.

“Council evaluates sponsorship based in part on the economic benefit to the city.

“Using the economy.id Event Impact Calendar the estimated benefit to the city is in the range of $3.5 million.

“Therefore council has again committed $20,000 to assist in the marketing and logistics cost of the event.

“Sponsorship benefits to the City of Ipswich include race naming rights of the time honoured and listed Eye Liner Stakes and on course signs which remain in place for 12 months.”

Cr Tully said council would work with the turf club to maximise the associated economic, social and promotional opportunities for the city.
