Council to decide on names for Nicholas Street places and spaces

The Ipswich community has had its say on preferred names for the places and spaces in the new CBD redevelopment, with the Mayor and councillors to cast their votes in upcoming meetings.

During August, the Ipswich community was offered the opportunity to suggest new names for nine key spaces in the new Nicholas Street development.

These included a chance to put forward names for the civic plaza, the two libraries, council’s new administration building and level one function spaces, two historic lane-ways and the overall precinct.

Launching on the Shape Your Ipswich web-page on 10 August and closing 30 August, close to 3,000 people visited the site, with 304 participants offering suggestions and more than 6,500 people voting on suggested names.

Many of the suggestions reflected a section of the community’s interest in recognising notable local identities across sports, the arts and commerce such as tennis champion Ash Barty and Scottish bagpiper Piper Joe McGee.

There was also significant support for the use of local Indigenous names as a way to pay tribute to the region’s first peoples.

Four names are expected to be decided on Thursday 24 September at council’s Ordinary Meeting, with remaining names to be decided in due course.

“I would like to thank participants for their diverse suggestions for naming these places and spaces in the heart of our city,” Deputy Mayor Marnie Doyle said.

“I note Councillors are tasked with the important responsibility of deciding names which will be accepted and welcomed by the whole community.”

The Ipswich City Council Ordinary Meeting on Thursday 24 September can be viewed live online from 9am via Ipswich City Council’s YouTube channel.

  1. How about naming some of the areas after the buildings and businesses that were destroyed in the Ipswich central area along with photos and story lines of the business and the people who worked there. Ritz, Cribb & Foote, TC Bierne, JW Berry + the Italian Cafes and the Historic Pubs (sadly, now all gone)

  2. Dear Sir/ Madam,

Thank you for an opportunity to give us residents of Ipswich a chance to name the Nicholas new development area and space.

We hereby nominate the name of this square as

    CITY GATE SQUARE

We feel the name is appropriated and easy for everyone to remember.
A name that we will all be proud of.

Thank you for your consideration .
