Details for Friday’s community Christmas party, plus what the mayor wants under our tree

Christmas comes to town this Friday and for the very first time Ipswich Mayor Andrew Antoniolli will join Santa in lighting the CBD for the festive season.

The community celebration will start with the Christmas Concert and Carols Quest in d’Arcy Doyle Place at 5.30pm followed by the Twilight Parade down Brisbane Street from 6.45pm.

The parade will come to a close with the lighting of the CBD Christmas tree and other decorative lights.

It’s going to be a great honour to meet Santa for the first time in my role as mayor.

Obviously I’ve turned on the lights of the family Christmas tree on many occasions, but I’ve never been part of something on such a significant scale.

I’m sure there will be a few nerves on the night but I feel like I’m ready for it and I’m well prepared. I’ve been a good boy this year so there won’t be any issues with Santa

Cr Antoniolli said he had two big ticket items on his Christmas wish list.

“More than anything I want the delivery of key election promises, both from Ipswich City Council and the Queensland Government, regardless of who wins next weekend’s election,” he said.

“I’d love to see a Norman Street Bridge and a Redbank rail extension left under this big tree in d’Arcy Doyle Place.

“For the community, I want people to celebrate the festive season with friends, family and even strangers.

“The spirit of Ipswich shines brighter than ever at this time of year and it makes me incredibly proud to be part of it all.”
