The Workshops Rail Museum
This won’t be the first time The Workshops Rail Museum site at North Ipswich has made history. The first train to run in Queensland steamed from here to Grandchester more than 145 years ago. The first diesel locomotive was also manufactured at the workshops in 1939. To celebrate the Queen’s Baton coming to Ipswich, the museum is offering free entry all day.
Riverlink Shopping Centre
Grab a coffee, or whatever else takes your fancy, and settle in to watch as the Queen’s Baton makes its way past Riverlink Shopping Centre. It will travel along Downs Street toward the centre before making its way along The Terrace and onto David Trumpy Bridge. Help make history and treat yourself with some shopping – it does not get much better than that!
St Mary’s Church
How good would a selfie with the Queen’s Baton and the iconic St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in the background look? You will be hard pressed to find a more impressive backdrop than the spires of this grand place of worship on Elizabeth Street. The church was built between 1900 and 1904 but has not lost any of its magnificence. The park across the road means finding a suitable viewing spot should be no trouble at all.
Brisbane Street
Line Ipswich’s main street and cheer the baton bearers on as they make their way along Brisbane Street and up Queen Victoria Parade. There will be no shortage of spots for spectators to see the baton. If you are feeling energetic, you can even walk alongside the baton on the footpath. Do not forget about wide range of dining options on offer before, during and after the event. Everything from casual coffee to full table service at one of the street’s bars or restaurants.
Limestone Park
If you do not want to go to it, let the Queen’s Baton Relay come to you by greeting it as it arrives at Limestone Park. Entertainment is planned from 4pm to 7pm with the baton set to arrive about 5.30pm. A selection of exciting cultural and sporting performances are planned and the region’s best food trucks will keep you fuelled up. From 7pm, an outdoor movie will be screened at the park’s amphitheatre.
