Funding puts tourist railway improvements on track

Tourism is booming in the Ipswich region and one of the most popular attractions is the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway.

But one of the stops, the 114-year-old Swanbank Station, needs some TLC and a Council Community Development grant will help ease the problem.

Arts and Social Development Committee Chairperson Cr Kylie Stoneman said a grant has been awarded to:

  • Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway Co-op Ltd: $1250 towards the cost of a replacement roof at the Swanbank Station. Stanwell Corporation Ltd has also supported the project by providing new corrugated iron. The co-op, which operates the tourist railway using vintage rolling stock and locomotives, sought funding to assist with labour costs associated with the installation of the new roof.

Cr Stoneman said the grant will help replace the existing roof and make the station safe and secure for tourists and operators for the next 100 years.

“The Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway Co-op heritage railway operations on the Swanbank-Bundamba line sees approximately 12,000 people through its ticket window and includes a souvenir shop which assists in raising revenue for the organisation,” she said.

“It is one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions and Council is pleased to help restore the station.”

Council allocated $140,000 for its Community Development Grants program in 2017-18. For more information on how to apply, visit www.ipswich.qld.gov.au
