The Ipswich community can now put forward alternative name suggestions for the former Paul Pisasale Bridge in Springfield Central and for Pisasale Drive in Yamanto, following landholder agreement to rename the drive.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said council today marked the next stage of community engagement to re-name the two assets, launching a Shape Your Ipswich page where the community can have their say on the new names until 11 March 2022.
“Today we are taking an important step towards the future of the City and closing a door on a part of our history,” Mayor Harding said.
“As we have done since the day this council was elected in March 2020, we are asking our community what it wants and what they think is appropriate moving forward.
“This is an election promise we are keeping to the people of Ipswich.”

Council’s Naming Procedure, which was adopted when council was in administration (Aug 2018-Mar 2020), states council can rename a location after consultation with impacted businesses and residents.
Support of 75 per cent or more is needed from landowners to proceed with a name change.
This was not required for the renaming of the bridge at Springfield. The signage on this bridge has since been removed.
Mayor Harding said pop-up stalls were scheduled for both Orion Springfield and Yamanto Central for this week in addition to the Shape Your Ipswich page.
“We expect there will be a long list of potential names for both the bridge and drive and we will collate them and check they meet the requirements of the Naming Procedure,” Mayor Harding said.
“The list will be shared with the community, via the Shape Your Ipswich Page and Facebook, and then people will be asked to vote on their favourite suggestions.
“A short list of preferred names from the community will be shared with Council in May 2022 for consideration and a decision.
Renaming Paul Pisasale Bridge and Pisasale Drive
The call for suggestions to re-name both the Bridge and Drive is now open.
If you have a suggestion for a new name you can share it here.
Council will then consider your suggestions when re-naming the bridge and drive.
It will be the first-time council has used this name-changing process.
The Shape Your Ipswich page will house background information, a copy of the Naming Procedure, consultation timeline, frequently asked questions and areas to share your ideas for both locations.
Details of the pop-up events can be found on the page also.
