How young people will help shape Ipswich’s future

Children and young people will have their say on issues that matter to them and help shape council’s decisions in a series of child and youth-led forums next month.

Ipswich City Council will partner with Mission Australia for Ipswich Children’s Voices – a panel discussion on 26 October which will give school-aged children (aged 7-11 years) the opportunity to share their views on important issues and put their questions to a panel of experts.

Council will also host a youth engagement series called Flick the ‘swich on 30 October, in partnership with Ipswich Youth Advisory Council.

Flick the ‘swich will be led by young people aged 12 – 24 years, who will ask the questions and discuss a range of topics from mental health to employment and diversity with local community leaders and industry representatives.

Mayor Teresa Harding said that Council is committed to engaging with a broad spectrum of the community on the issues that matter to them now and into the future, including children, young people and families.

“We want to ensure our city values the diverse views of children and young people, and forums like Flick the ‘swich and Ipswich Children’s Voices give young people the opportunity to be heard and play an active role in their community,” Mayor Harding said.

“This Council is committed to working closely with young people and connecting with local organisations, to focus on important issues like youth unemployment, mental health and children’s healthy development.”

Children across Ipswich shared their views on the issues that mattered to them at policy workshops held at Ipswich Libraries.

Council adopted its new policy on 27 August which recognises the vital role that children, young people and families play in Ipswich’s growth and success.

This new council policy meets a 2017-21 Corporate Plan commitment and has been shaped by comprehensive research and community consultation.
