Ipswich on the big (and small) screen

Ipswich’s mix of old and new is a major drawcard for filming. Here are five productions that bring our city to the screen.

1. Inspector Gadget 2 (2003)

French Stewart, Elaine Hendrix, Tony Martin

Live action comedy that went straight to VHS and DVD. A car chase was filmed at Middle Road near RAAF Base Amberley. Those born after 2000 can learn more about the VHS format.

 

2. I Love Pop Music (2009)

Ben Lee

John Street in Rosewood features as the primary location in Ben Lee’s music video. The first single off Lee’s Rebirth of Venus album also includes the Rosewood Hotel along with a bunch of beer-sipping locals.

3. The Railway Man (2013)

Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, Jeremy Irvine

A former British army officer and prisoner of war discovers the Japanese interpreter who tortured him during the war is still alive. Torture scenes were shot at the old rail yards in North Ipswich.

4. Don’t Tell (2017)

Jack Thompson, Rachel Griffiths, Aden Young

A woman takes on the church to expose sexual abuse at a private school. Based on events that changed Australia’s child protection laws, scenes were shot at the old courthouse on the corner of East and Limestone streets.

5. We Were Tomorrow (2017)

Chai Hansen, Madeleine Kennedy, Johnny Brady

Aussie TV series filmed at Woodlands of Marburg, Rosewood Railway Museum, The Workshops Rail Museum, The Old Church Marburg and Grandchester Sawmill. The crew purchased props from Ipswich businesses to return profits to the city.
